I am a freelance journalist and essayist who has written for The New York Times, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and many other publications. I've won numerous awards, including a prestigious Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan.
My first book, part journalism and part memoir, was published by Grand Central Publishing. The San Francisco Chronicle named it one of the best books of 2012.
I grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland, graduated from Wesleyan University and worked in New York City’s independent film industry before becoming a newspaper reporter in 2004. I live in Bend, Oregon with my husband and two sons. The last part of my name is pronounced mc-CULL-oh.
